High Sales Don't Always Mean A Healthy Business

It’s easy to assume a business is performing well when the diary is full and new work keeps coming in. From the outside, everything appears to be moving in the right direction.

One of the most common conversations I have with new clients tells a different story.

“We’re busier than we’ve ever been, so why does it still feel like we’re constantly chasing money?”

After more than ten years working in accounting and payroll, I’ve seen businesses with impressive turnover but disappointing profits. Material costs rise, wages increase, suppliers change their prices and projects continue to be quoted using figures that made sense a year ago. Revenue increases, yet profitability quietly slips away.

What I often notice is that business owners know exactly how much work they’re winning, but they don’t always know which customers, services or projects are generating the best return. That’s not because the information isn’t there. It’s because nobody has ever helped them interpret it properly.

At Best-Assistant Accounting Ltd, I help businesses across Kingsbury understand what their financial information is really saying, so decisions are based on facts rather than assumptions.

Meet The Accountant Behind Best-Assistant

Hello, I’m Polina, Founder and Director of Best-Assistant Accounting Ltd.

I’ve spent more than ten years working with sole traders, contractors, manufacturers, retailers and growing limited companies, helping business owners make sense of their finances.

Earlier in my career, I realised many clients received professionally prepared accounts every year but still weren’t confident answering practical questions about their own business. They knew their turnover, but not their margins. They understood how busy they were, but not whether every project was making money.

That experience changed the way I approach accounting.

When you work with me, you’ll always deal directly with me. I don’t believe reports should simply be filed away after they’re produced. I believe they should become practical tools that help business owners make better decisions throughout the year.

I’m AAT Level 3 qualified and currently completing AAT Level 4. I also hold an ICB Level 3 Diploma in Payroll Management, I’m an Associate Member of ACIPP, and Best-Assistant Accounting Ltd is AML registered, ICO registered and professionally insured.

Understanding Profit Gives You Better Control

One of the biggest misconceptions I come across is that turnover is the best measure of success.

It isn’t.

Turnover shows how much work your business has completed, but it doesn’t explain whether projects are profitable, whether overheads are increasing too quickly or whether your pricing still reflects today’s costs.

Once business owners begin reviewing margins alongside revenue, they often start asking different questions. Instead of simply trying to win more work, they begin focusing on the work that generates the strongest return.

Those are the conversations I enjoy most because they’re often the point where accounting starts supporting business growth rather than simply recording it.

Your First Month As A Client

Case Study: Helping A Kingsbury Building Contractor Improve Job Profitability

The Challenge

A local building contractor had a healthy pipeline of work, but profit margins varied significantly between projects. Labour costs, subcontractor expenses and material prices had all increased, yet quotations hadn’t changed to reflect those rising costs. The owner knew turnover was improving but couldn’t identify which projects were genuinely profitable.

What We Did

I reviewed approximately 1,080 transactions, analysed project costs, reorganised bookkeeping, introduced cloud accounting and implemented monthly management reporting that tracked labour, materials and profitability for individual jobs.

The Result

Within five months, reporting accuracy improved significantly and administration time reduced by around 22%. More importantly, the business gained clear visibility of project margins, allowing future work to be priced more accurately and giving the owner greater confidence when planning future growth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Being busy doesn't always mean you're making healthy profits. Rising costs, low margins and outdated pricing can all reduce profitability, even when sales continue to increase.

Yes. They help you understand which areas of the business are performing well and where improvements are needed, making important decisions much easier.

For most growing businesses, reviewing profitability every month provides enough information to identify trends before they become larger problems.

Absolutely. Project costing and management reporting often reveal opportunities that aren't obvious from bank balances alone.

Not necessarily. I always look at your existing processes first and recommend improvements that genuinely add value rather than creating unnecessary disruption.

Make Every Business Decision With Greater Confidence

The most valuable financial information isn’t the information that’s filed away at year end. It’s the information that helps you price work properly, protect your profit margins and make confident decisions every month.

If you’d like an accountant who helps you understand the story behind your numbers rather than simply producing them, I’d be delighted to help.
